Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy saves a tooth by removing infected pulp and sealing the inside of the tooth. Performed in-house at Arapahoe Dental.

A procedure that treats infection or damage to the pulp tissue inside a tooth, allowing the natural tooth to remain in place.

Dr. Luciano Retana opens the tooth, removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them. A crown is often placed afterward at the Boulder practice to protect the tooth long-term.

Root canal therapy stops infection and pain while preserving your natural tooth, which is almost always preferable to extraction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about root canal therapy.

A root canal is needed when the inside of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed, often signaled by lasting pain, sensitivity to heat, or swelling. It saves a tooth that might otherwise be lost.

The infected pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected, then sealed. The area is numbed throughout, and it's done in-house here rather than referred out.

Most root canals are completed in one to two visits, depending on the tooth and how many canals it has.

Despite the reputation, a modern root canal feels much like getting a filling. The tooth usually needs a crown afterward to protect it for the long term.

Mild tenderness for a few days is normal and eases with over-the-counter pain relief. Most people return to their usual routine the next day.
