Root Canal Retreatment

Root canal retreatment addresses a previous root canal that has not healed correctly, giving the tooth a second chance before extraction. Performed at Arapahoe Dental.

A second root canal performed on a tooth where the original treatment has failed, often due to missed canals, new decay, or persistent infection.

The previous filling material is removed at the Boulder office, the canals are cleaned and disinfected, and the tooth is sealed again. A new crown may be needed afterward.

Retreatment gives a tooth a second chance before extraction. Success rates are high when planned correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about root canal retreatment.

Retreatment is for a tooth that had a root canal in the past but is still causing pain, sensitivity, or signs of infection. It offers a second chance to save the tooth before extraction.

The previous filling material is removed, the canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected again, and the tooth is resealed — much like the original root canal, with the area numbed for comfort.

Because the canals have to be reopened and re-cleaned, retreatment often takes a bit longer than a first root canal, sometimes across one or two visits.

If retreatment isn't likely to resolve things, a small surgical step like an apicoectomy may be the next option. We'll talk through what gives the tooth its best chance.

Mild tenderness for a few days is normal and usually managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Most people return to their routine right away.
