Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is a pill-based option for patients with significant dental anxiety or longer treatment visits. Prescribed and managed by Dr. Luciano Retana, it keeps you conscious and responsive but deeply relaxed throughout your appointment.
A prescription medication taken before your appointment that produces a deep state of relaxation. You remain conscious and able to respond, but anxiety is significantly reduced.
After Dr. Luciano Retana reviews your medical history, the medication is prescribed. You take it shortly before arriving at the Boulder office. A driver brings you to and from the appointment, and the team monitors you throughout the visit.
Oral sedation makes anxiety, gag reflex, or fear of long appointments much easier to manage. It can also reduce the number of visits needed for complex care.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about oral sedation.
Oral sedation suits patients who feel real anxiety about dental visits, or anyone facing a longer appointment who would rather stay deeply relaxed throughout. It's a good middle ground between nitrous and IV sedation.
You take a prescribed pill before your visit, so you'll need someone to drive you. During treatment you stay awake and able to respond, but calm and drowsy — most people remember little of the appointment afterward.
The medication takes effect within about an hour and lasts through the appointment. The treatment length itself depends on what you're having done that day.
Because the effects linger, you'll need a ride home and should plan a quiet rest of the day. Dr. Luciano Retana reviews your health history and medications first to make sure it's a sensible choice for you.
The grogginess wears off over the following hours. Most people feel back to normal by the next day, and there are no lasting effects from the sedation itself.
